Greptile: Navigating the AI-Powered Code Review Market

  • 2 min read

AI-driven code review startup Greptile is currently in the midst of raising a Series A funding round, with sources revealing to TechCrunch that the amount is $30 million at a valuation of $180 million. The round is being led by Benchmark partner Eric Vishria, although one individual has mentioned that the deal is not finalized and terms could potentially change.

Established by Dasksh Gupta following his graduation from Georgia Tech in 2023, Greptile underwent Y Combinator's winter 2024 cohort and successfully raised a $4 million seed round led by Initialized Capital upon completion of the program. Gupta explained to TechCrunch that the bot his company developed functions akin to a seasoned colleague, demonstrating a profound grasp of the client's code, which allows it to identify bugs and other potential issues that might escape human reviewers.

The competitive landscape in the AI-powered code review arena is fierce, with Greptile facing off against major rivals such as Graphite, which raised a $52 million Series B earlier this year, and Coderabbit, which secured a $16 million Series A last year. The high-stakes competition has reportedly led Greptile to demand its staff to work exceedingly long hours.

Gupta, then 22, candidly posted on Xin that Greptile "offers no work-life-balance." He detailed that employees typically work from 9 am to 11 pm, including Saturdays, and occasionally Sundays. After his post went viral, Gupta stated to various news outlets that outperforming the competition necessitates maximum effort from every team member. "No one cares about the third-best company, or even the second-best company in any category in software. If you’re going to put in 95 percent effort, it’s the equivalent of putting in 0 percent effort," he told Inc in an interview.

Despite the demanding work culture, securing an A-list venture capitalist like Benchmark at a robust Series A valuation could prove advantageous for Greptile's trajectory. Neither Greptile nor Benchmark responded to requests for comment.
