Meta's AI Overhaul: Building a Superintelligence Lab with 3400 Employees

  • 2 min read

Meta has unveiled a new AI organizational structure following a series of organizational changes. Mark Zuckerberg has made a bold move to create a new organization centered around a "Superintelligence Lab," which has now integrated over 3,400 employees. The head of this new team is Alexandr Wang, who serves as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), with former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman as his deputy, mainly responsible for AI products and applications.

The new organization is divided into four main teams. First, there is the AGI Basic Research team, which brings together many top talents. Next, the AI Product team is primarily responsible for developing Meta AI assistants, similar to ChatGPT. In addition, there is a Basic AI Lab led by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, which continues to advance basic AI research. Finally, there is a small team focusing on the development of Llama5, aiming to further promote Meta's progress in large model technology.

The establishment of this new structure has attracted attention, especially its similarity to ByteDance. Meta's goal is to pursue an efficient organizational model with "fewer people but more GPUs," which has a significant impact in the industry. At the same time, Meta is actively attracting top talents from companies such as OpenAI, Apple, and Google to enhance its AI technology competitiveness.

However, this adjustment has also caused some internal reactions. Members of the original Llama team have expressed doubts about the newly joined high-paid geniuses, believing that the capabilities of these external employees have not been proven. In addition, Meta's Superintelligence Lab currently appears high-profile but mysterious, requiring multiple security checks to enter and exit the lab.

Recently, two AI leaders from Apple also joined Meta, further strengthening Meta's technical team. This series of actions indicates that Zuckerberg is actively reorganizing the AI team with a more open attitude, striving to secure a place in the fiercely competitive AI field.

Key Points:

– Meta's new AI organizational structure integrates over 3,400 employees, led by Alexandr Wang.

– The team is divided into four parts: AGI Basic Research, AI Products, Basic AI Lab, and Llama5 Development.

– Meta is trying to enhance its competitiveness in the AI field by poaching industry talents with high salaries, attracting top talents from companies such as Apple.
