Meta has unveiled its new AI architecture following a series of organizational shake-ups, marking a bold move into the world of artificial intelligence. Spearheaded by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company has built a new organization centered around a "Super AI Lab," integrating over 3,400 employees. Leading this new team is Alexandr Wang, who serves as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), with former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman as his deputy, focusing on AI products and applications. The AI-generated images are provided by Midjourney, a licensed image service provider.
The new structure is divided into four core teams. The first is the AGI Fundamental Research Team, which brings together numerous top talents. Following that is the AI Product Team, primarily responsible for developing Meta AI assistants akin to ChatGPT. Additionally, there is a Basic AI Lab led by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, which continues to advance fundamental AI research. Lastly, a smaller team is dedicated to the development of Llama5, aiming to further propel Meta's progress in large model technology.
This new architecture has garnered attention, particularly for its resemblance to ByteDance. Meta's goal is to achieve an efficient organizational model with "fewer people but more GPUs," which is influential in the industry. Meta is also actively attracting top talent from companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Google to enhance its AI technology competitiveness.
However, this reorganization has sparked internal reactions. Members of the original Llama team have expressed skepticism about the newly joined high-paid geniuses, questioning their unproven abilities. Moreover, Meta's Super AI Lab appears high-profile yet mysterious, with multiple security checks required for entry and exit.
Recently, two AI leaders from Apple have also joined Meta, further strengthening its technical team. These moves indicate that Zuckerberg is adopting a more open stance, actively reorganizing the AI team, and striving for a competitive edge in the fiercely contested AI domain.
