The Shift in ByteDance's AI Core Team: Stability and Continuity Amidst Change

  • 2 min read

In the fast-paced world of technology, change is inevitable, and ByteDance's recent reshuffle within its AI division has sparked discussions on the stability and continuity of its core team. Yang Jianchao, the former head of ByteDance's DouBao Large Model Visual Multimodal Direction, has announced a temporary departure to focus on personal matters, including family and the demanding work pace that spans across North America and China. His role has been seamlessly transitioned to Zhou Chang, formerly the technical lead for Alibaba's M6 Large Model, known by his nickname "Shiguang."

Zhou Chang, a renowned expert in the field of AI with an undergraduate degree from Fudan University and a Ph.D. from Peking University, will continue to lead the "Seed Visual Model" team, reporting to Wu Yonghui, former Vice President of Google DeepMind. This move has raised concerns within the industry about the stability of ByteDance's AI core technology team, as Yang Jianchao has been a central figure in ByteDance's AI system since joining the company in 2018, taking full charge of visual model development from 2023.

The Seed team, with a global presence, is dedicated to cutting-edge AI research, focusing on image and video generation. ByteDance has consistently emphasized its unwavering commitment to long-term investment in foundational research. As Zhou Chang steps into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise, having led the development of Alibaba's M6 model, a testament to his capabilities in advancing AI technology.

The transition signifies not just a change in leadership but also a continuation of ByteDance's dedication to pushing the boundaries of AI. With Zhou Chang at the helm, the Seed team is poised to maintain its innovative spirit and contribute significantly to the AI landscape. The company's commitment to its AI core remains steadfast, ensuring that the pursuit of technological advancement is not deterred by the temporary absence of key personnel.
