The company's latest AI model, Grok, is being trained on employees' facial expressions through an initiative named "Skippy." This internal project has raised eyebrows among staff, sparking concerns about privacy and the use of personal likeness.
Since April, over two hundred xAI employees have been asked to record their facial expressions while interacting with colleagues, all in the name of helping Grok better comprehend human emotions. The project's goal is to refine AI's ability to recognize and analyze the subtle emotions displayed during human communication. Yet, this request has not been without its critics.
Privacy concerns have prompted some employees to voice their apprehensions, with a few even opting out of the project entirely. Participants are required to sign an agreement granting xAI "permanent" access to the video data, a move that has only heightened fears about potential privacy breaches. Despite assurances that the footage will be used solely for training purposes and not to create digital personas, the unease among employees remains palpable.
The Skippy project, however, is not without its innovative aspects. xAI has recently unveiled two virtual avatars, Ani and Rudi, capable of engaging in video chats with users and displaying a range of emotions and movements. The introduction of these virtual characters has sparked widespread public debate, with some arguing that their portrayal is too explicit and extreme, raising ethical questions.
