Elon Musk's xAI has seen a significant surge in its app Grok's revenue, thanks to the recent launch of Grok 4, the company's latest AI model. On July 9, Grok 4 was introduced, and by July 11, the iOS gross revenue skyrocketed by 325%, reaching $419,000 from $99,000 the day before the launch, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures.

The days following the launch witnessed a consistent rise in revenue, with gross earnings hitting over $367,000 for a couple of days before slightly dipping to $310,000 on July 14. In addition to this, the daily downloads of the Grok iOS app saw a 279% increase on July 11, reaching 197,000 downloads, compared to 52,000 before the Grok 4 launch.

However, when Grok's AI companions were added the following week on July 14, the increase in downloads and revenue was less dramatic. While the AI companions likely attracted more users, they are not yet a major revenue generator for the company, despite being exclusive to "Super Grok" subscribers who pay $30 per month.

Globally, Grok's iOS downloads increased by 40% the day after the companions were launched, reaching 171,000 daily installs, but revenue only saw a 9% increase, totaling $337,000. This indicates that while the launch had an impact, it was smaller compared to the introduction of the new AI model.

With the launch of Grok 4, xAI introduced an expensive new subscription plan, SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 per month. This is the company's most expensive plan to date and offers early access to Grok 4 Heavy and other new features. Despite being more expensive than comparable plans from other major AI providers such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, there has been a notable demand for Grok's subscription plans.

xAI initially faced criticism for consulting Elon Musk's X posts for answers in its AI. The company has since addressed this issue. The new model's launch also propelled Grok's ranking on the U.S. App Store, making it the No. 3 app overall and No. 2 in the Productivity category by July 12. Although interest has waned slightly over the past week, Grok remains at No. 17 overall and No. 2 in Productivity, according to Appfigures data.

Appfigures focused on iOS data for this analysis, as the dataset is more comprehensive than Android data, which is only available through July 14. The model requires more time to process Google Play data.
