Meta's Bold Leap into AI: Redefining the Future with a 3400-Strong Team

  • 2 min read

In a strategic reconfiguration, Meta has unveiled a new AI architecture, spearheaded by a "super intelligent lab" at its core. The new organization, boasting over 3400 employees, is led by Alexandr Wang as the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), with Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, as his deputy, focusing on AI products and applications. The images, generated by AI and licensed by Midjourney, reflect the cutting-edge nature of this venture.

The new structure is composed of four key teams. The AGI Fundamentals team is at the forefront, gathering a constellation of top minds in the field. Beside them, the AI Products team is dedicated to developing Meta's AI assistant, akin to ChatGPT, marking a significant step in the evolution of AI assistants. Under the guidance of Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, the Basic AI Lab continues to drive forward the frontiers of foundational AI research. Lastly, a specialized team is working on the development of Llama5, aiming to push Meta's advancements in large model technology.

The unveiling of this new architecture has piqued industry interest, particularly due to its resemblance to ByteDance's approach. Meta's ambition is to achieve an organization where "people are few but GPUs are many," a model that is gaining traction for its efficiency. Meta is actively recruiting top talent from companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Google, bolstering its AI technology competitiveness.

However, this shift has also sparked internal debate. Members of the original Llama team have voiced skepticism about the newly hired high-salary geniuses, questioning their proven capabilities. Meta's super intelligent lab appears to be both high-profile and enigmatic, with multiple security checks required for entry.

Recently, two AI leads from Apple have joined Meta, further strengthening their technical team. These moves signal Zuckerberg's more open approach to reorganizing the AI team, striving for a dominant position in the fiercely competitive AI landscape.
