The Linguistic fingerprints of AI: How Chatbots are Shaping our Communication

  • 2 min read

In a fascinating study conducted by researchers at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Human Development, it has been revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly influencing human language. This shift is particularly evident in the rise of "GPT vocabulary" in everyday conversations, driven by AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

The study began with an intriguing premise. The research team fed millions of human-written texts, including emails, academic papers, and news reports, into ChatGPT to observe how the AI would "polish" these texts. Through this process, they identified words favored by AI, such as "delve," "meticulous," "emphasize," "support," and "inquire," which have gradually become "new favorites" in our daily communications.

To verify the frequency of these "GPT words," the research team tracked and analyzed 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes before and after the release of ChatGPT. The results showed that these AI-preferred words have become more prominent in spoken English. Co-author Levin Brinkmann noted that the language patterns stored in AI seem to be influencing human thought processes. We consciously or unconsciously begin to mimic those we perceive as wise or important, and many now view AI as such an entity.

Language is inherently an evolving process, influenced by many factors. However, this study offers a new perspective on how humans and AI are mutually influencing and co-evolving. Our increasing use of "GPT vocabulary" in daily conversations not only reflects the impact of technology on us but also prompts thoughts on the future evolution of language.
