Suno Bolsters Music Editing Capabilities with WavTool Acquisition Amidst Legal Challenges

  • 2 min read

AI music company Suno has announced the acquisition of WavTool, a browser-based AI digital audio workstation (DAW), in a strategic move to enhance its songwriting and production editing capabilities. Launched in 2023, WavTool offers a suite of features including audio separation, AI audio generation, and an AI music assistant, which are expected to integrate seamlessly with Suno's latest editing interface.

The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, but a spokesperson for Suno confirmed that most of WavTool's employees have joined Suno's product and engineering teams, with the number of those who did not join undisclosed. This acquisition comes at a delicate time for Suno, as the company is currently embroiled in multiple legal battles.

At the beginning of this month, country musician Tony Justice and his label, 5th Wheel Records, filed a lawsuit against Suno, accusing the company of using copyrighted audio recordings in training its AI music generator. This lawsuit mirrors similar copyright infringement claims made last year by major music labels, including Universal Music, Warner Music, and Sony Music. According to Bloomberg, these key players in the music industry are currently in licensing negotiations with Suno.

Suno acquired WavTool a few months ago, with the browser DAW set to be discontinued in November. The timing of this acquisition announcement seems aimed at diverting public attention from the ongoing legal disputes. Legal battles can shake investor confidence, and the acquisition announcement might be a signal to investors that Suno remains committed to growth.

In May of this year, Suno secured $125 million in funding, providing a strong foundation for the company's ongoing development. This financial backing, coupled with the strategic acquisition of WavTool, positions Suno to navigate the legal challenges and continue to innovate in the AI music space.
