In a groundbreaking move, NetEase Youdao unveiled and open-sourced its Confucius3-Math series AI model, a mathematical reasoning tool designed to excel in the field of education. This model, the first of its kind to offer such cost-effective high performance, can be efficiently run on consumer-grade GPUs. The Confucius3-Math model has demonstrated exceptional performance in a range of mathematical reasoning tasks, surpassing many large-scale general-purpose models.
Through extensive reinforcement learning and innovative algorithms, the Confucius3-Math model has significantly enhanced its problem-solving capabilities in mathematics. With a training cost of just $26,000, its inference performance is an impressive 15 times higher than that of DeepSeek R1. This has led to top rankings across various math-related datasets, particularly in GAOKAO-Bench (Math), a benchmarking framework based on college entrance exam questions, where the model scored an impressive 98.5, showcasing its robust mathematical reasoning skills.
The launch of this model not only offers performance advantages but also significantly lowers the barrier to AI application in educational settings. Addressing challenges such as uneven educational resources and a lack of personalized tutoring, Confucius3-Math offers extremely low service costs, at just $0.15 per million tokens, greatly enhancing educational equity. This makes it possible for ordinary educational institutions and developers to deploy professional-level mathematical AI applications with minimal investment.
NetEase Youdao's Chief Scientist, Duan Yitao, stated that the introduction of the Confucius3-Math model is to prove that building powerful reasoning models within specific domains at low cost is entirely feasible. This not only provides a strong reference for the research and application of educational large models but also injects new vitality into the continuous innovation in the "AI + Education" field.
Since the launch of its first educational large model, "Zi Yue," in July 2023, NetEase Youdao has rapidly expanded its applications in the educational field, continuously introducing vertical applications focused on mathematical education. The open-sourcing of the Confucius3-Math model will help more developers and educators share technological achievements and promote the common development of educational technology.
Duan Yitao emphasized that the ultimate goal of AI in education is not to replace teachers but to use technology as a crucial lever for advancing educational equity. It is hoped that the open-sourcing of the Confucius3-Math model will attract more developers to explore the potential applications of mathematical reasoning models in education.
