"Chaos at OpenAI: The Bizarre Saga of Sam Altman's Reinstatement"

  • 2 min read

In a twist worthy of a Hollywood script, a film is reportedly being developed to depict the tumultuous events that unfolded at OpenAI in 2023, when co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was fired and then quickly reinstated, all within the span of five days. The movie, titled "Artificial," is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, with details still being finalized.

Luca Guadagnino, acclaimed director of "Call Me by Your Name" and "Challengers," is in talks to helm the project. The studio is considering casting Andrew Garfield as Altman, Monica Barbaro, known for her role in "A Complete Unknown," as former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov, from "Anora," to play co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who advocated for Altman's removal.

Adding a touch of humor to the narrative, "Saturday Night Live" writer Simon Rich is reportedly behind the screenplay, suggesting that the film will incorporate comedic elements. This seems fitting, given that the world of AI often presents its own absurdities, and the events that took place two years ago were nothing short of bizarre.

In November 2023, Sam Altman was dismissed from the AI company and resigned from his position as CEO and his role on the board, with the board citing a lack of trust in his leadership. However, after five days of intense discussions and negotiations, an agreement was reached, leading to Altman's reinstatement.

The casting choices for "Artificial" are yet to be confirmed, but the film promises to be a fascinating portrayal of the drama that unfolded. The reception among general audiences will be particularly intriguing, especially considering the growing ubiquity of AI tools like ChatGPT. This cinematic retelling of a real-life corporate soap opera will undoubtedly capture the attention of viewers, offering a glimpse into the chaotic world of AI development and the personalities that drive it.
